Chain Link, in practice
Chain link is the best value per foot for containment, and black vinyl-coated fabric visually disappears against a treeline in a way galvanized does not — which matters on a back boundary where the aim is a dog fence rather than a feature.
Tension is what separates a chain link fence that stays tight from one that bellies out. Terminal posts, tension bars and properly tensioned fabric are the whole craft, and a loose fence is a fence that was rushed.

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover a Fence
Fences sit in their own part of a homeowners policy, with their own limit. Storm damage generally qualifies; age and soil movement generally do not, and the deductible often decides the rest.

Repair a Few Panels or Replace the Whole Fence
The panels are what you see. The posts are what decide whether the fence is worth repairing, and a fence with bad posts cannot be patched back to health.

Fencing on a Slope: Racked or Stepped
A fence built for a flat yard looks wrong on a hill and leaves gaps a dog walks under. The choice between racking and stepping is made before the first post goes in.

FAQ
Chain Link — questions
Is chain link a bad-looking choice?
Galvanized chain link looks like what it is. Black vinyl-coated chain link is a different thing — it disappears against shrubs and trees, it does not rust, and it keeps a dog in a yard for a fraction of a privacy fence. For a back boundary or a run, it is a sensible choice that a lot of people are surprised by.
How tall should a chain link fence be for a dog?
Four feet for most dogs, five or six for a jumper or a large breed. Height matters less than the bottom: a dog that wants out digs, and a tension wire at the bottom or the fabric buried a few inches stops it. A gate that latches properly is the other place dogs get out.
