Gates & Automation, in practice

A sagging gate is nearly always a post problem rather than a gate problem. The post carries the whole leaf on a lever arm, and a gate post set to the same depth as a line post will move. Bigger post, deeper footing, more concrete.

Automation adds requirements rather than just convenience — safety loops and reversing sensors so the gate cannot close on a vehicle or a person, and a manual release so a power cut does not trap you on the wrong side of it.

FAQ

Gates & Automation — questions

Why does my gate not latch any more?

The post has moved or the gate has sagged. Gates hang from one post and that post carries all the weight, so a post set shallow or without concrete leans over a wet season and the latch no longer meets. A sagging gate is fixed with a diagonal brace or a cable; a leaning post is reset. Gate posts are set deeper and heavier than line posts for this reason.

Can a driveway gate be automated?

Yes — swing or slide openers with remotes, keypads and phone control are routine. The gate and its posts have to be built for the motor: heavier posts, a level track for a slide gate, and power run to the opener. An automated gate on a fence that was not built for it is an opener that fails.
