Wood Privacy Fencing, in practice

Post depth and setting is the entire job. A post set shallow because the auger hit limestone will lean, and across much of Davidson, Williamson and Rutherford County the rock is close enough to the surface that this is a routine decision rather than a rare one. Drilling costs more than stopping short and it is the correct answer.

Concrete should be crowned above grade so water sheds away from the post rather than pooling on a flat collar. It is a small detail and it is a large part of why some wood fences rot at grade in eight years and others do not.

FAQ

Wood Privacy Fencing — questions

Cedar or pressure-treated pine for a privacy fence?

Cedar resists rot and insects naturally, stays straighter and looks better as it grays; pressure-treated pine is cheaper and lasts well when it is stained. Either wants posts set in concrete below frost depth and rails that are not going to sag. In Middle Tennessee humidity, the posts are what fail first on both, and they are the part not to save on.

How long does a wood fence last?

Fifteen to twenty years for cedar, ten to fifteen for treated pine, with the posts deciding it. A fence stained every few years lasts toward the top of those ranges; one left bare lasts toward the bottom. Rails that were undersized sag by year three regardless, which is why the rails are specified rather than assumed.
